Mathews Commits to WOLBI
Joseph Mathews will be coming to Word of Life after a storied high school soccer career. After years on the mission field with his family in Liberia, West Africa, his family moved to Hampstead, Maryland. In Maryland, Joseph played for the Coppermine and North Carroll United club teams. He also played for Carroll Christian High School. At Carroll Christian, Joseph tallied an all-time school-record 156 career goals. He also added four 1st team All-Conference selections 4 and four All-Tournament Team selections. He finished his senior season as the Carroll Christian boys' soccer team MVP.
On his commitment to the Huskies, Joseph had this to say: "I am excited to play for WOL because I get to play the sport I love plus use it as a ministry to others."
Head Coach Justin Lough added his thoughts: "Joseph obviously brings an incredible goal-scoring record with him from high school and we're excited to see how his finishing and physicality translate at the college level. The standout feature of Joseph's game is his ability to consistently put shots on target from all angles and distances, generally picking his spots in the corners of the net. Add to this his impressive height, pace, and natural skill on the ball picked up from years playing in Liberia and we believe that Joseph could be an offensive powerhouse for our team. The most exciting thing about Joseph is his clear desire to honor the Lord and gain a solid spiritual foundation at Word of Life while using his talent to minister through soccer. Conversations with him revealed his incessant drive for excellence and an earnest desire to glorify God. We're so excited that he will be joining us!"
